چکیده
Gordonia jacobaea strain MV-1 is characterized by its ability to synthesize carotenoids (de Miguel et al., 2000). This bacterium belongs to the broad and diverse group of mycolic acid-containing actinomycetes, known as the mycolata group. Mycolata contains microorganisms of industrial interest such as Corynebacterium glutamicum, as well as others of clinical relevance such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, M. leprae, and Nocardia asteroides complex and N. brasiliensis. Mycolata have notoriously impermeable cell walls due to their thick peptidoglycan layer and the covalently linked mycolic acid layer, which contains also other extractable lipids (Daffé et al., 1983; Rangaka et al., 2015). Bacteria are fundamentally divided into two groups, Gram-positive and -negative, based on the chemical and physical properties of their cell walls. The classic Gram stain reaction permits the useful distinction between Gram-positive and -negative bacteria. Gram staining results largely affect the initial classifi cation of an unknown bacterium and the selection of follow-up identifi cation proc...

Probiotic bacteria are defi ned by FAO/WHO as “Live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amount confer a health benefi t” (Fuller, 1986; Reid et al., 2005). Probiotics are characterized by numerous antagonistic effects against the Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens. In addition, probiotics are also believed to reduce the risk of disorders from bacteria in the gastrointestin...

In these decades biocontrol, or biological control, is an alternative mean to control plant diseases. In several fungal biocontrol agents, GMC oxidoreductases are involved in biocontrol activity. For example, in Talaromyces fl avus (Klöcker) Stolk and Samson, a glucose oxidase (AAB09442), a member of GMC oxidoreductase, is involved in its biocontrol activity of Verticillium dahliae Klebahn (Sto...

Sea cucumbers are found in various sea environments like sea floors from the deep sea to intertidal areas (Foster and Hodgson, 1995; Uthicje et al., 2009). Sea cucumbers belong to the phylum Echinodermata and they mainly feed on detritus containing organic matter, microalgae, and bacteria (Massin, 1982; Moriarty, 1982; Yingst, 1976). Gut microorganisms are important for digestion of diets, but ...

The discovery of antibiotics was considered to be a life-saving advance for humans against pathogens. However, in the past few decades several pathogens have been reported to develop resistance to the antibiotics that were believed to invincible, particularly methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) (Grundmann et al., 2011; Pfeifer et al., 20...
